Dr. Shaw, former President of Standex Engraving, has extensive experience engraving embossing rolls, plates and injection molds. Having participated in the industry’s transformation from traditional artistry to digital technology, he now uses this website to share his work and assist graphic artists and designers to develop new textures.
This website is an open resource for the industrial engraving community, showcasing the application of RHINO and GRASSHOPPER to create complex, organic geometries.
It represents my learning of Rhino and Grasshopper, powerful tools to make interesting geometries.
The site is organized into two sections: DESIGNS and METHODS. Designs demonstrate how to generate specific textures parametrically - allowing users to change designs or tweak production tolerances without redrawing. Methods provide direct, simplified tools for efficient texture generation.
I would like to personally thank the many talented and dedicated colleagues that I have had the pleasure of working with during this journey into digital texturing.
Disclaimer regarding Script Downloads:
The Grasshopper definitions provided on this site are intended to illustrate specific algorithmic principles and texturing methods. To ensure they run smoothly on a wide variety of hardware, the scripts have been intentionally kept lightweight and simplified.
Please note that the input parameters (sliders) are tuned for the visual examples shown. They have not been exhaustively range-tested; moving sliders to extreme values may result in invalid geometry or increased computation time. These tools are conceptual starting points, not production-ready manufacturing files.
